What's Actually Happening
IRCC's total application inventory across all programs stood at 2,154,300 as of March 31, 2026, with a 43% overall backlog rate. Express Entry — the fastest economic-class stream — improved to a backlog of just 10%, with a service standard of 6 months for 80% of applications.
Family sponsorship has been trending in the opposite direction through 2026, as IRCC redirects processing resources toward clearing the economic-class backlog. Humanitarian and Compassionate applications and the Federal Self-Employed and Start-Up Visa programs are the worst off: processing times exceeding ten years in most cases.
The Real Problem: There's Still No Ombudsman
Unlike telecom (CCTS) or banking (OBSI), immigration has no independent ombudsman you can escalate a stalled file to. IRCC's own service standards are targets, not enforceable deadlines — so a file sitting well past the stated processing time has no independent body to appeal to.
What Actually Works If You're Stuck
Use the official webform to request an update once you're past IRCC's stated processing time for your category — it's the documented first step.
Contact your MP's office. Immigration is one of the most common file types MPs' offices handle, and they can request a status update on your behalf through official channels.
For extreme delays, a mandamus application (asking the Federal Court to compel a decision) becomes realistic once a file has sat well beyond service standards with no explanation — worth a real legal consultation before filing.
